It is same situation like for instance before many years at beginning of USB soundcards, there were issues with AMD USB host bus controllers vs Intel host bus controllers, which worked out of box without any troubles. for whatever reasons (drivers, firmware etc.). Your observed incompatibility is between particular USB 2.0 host controller and MOTU MIDI devices. It is handled separately, this also applies to any downstream HUBs (although component can be in one physical chip package, there are actually two hubs and PHYs inside). IMO, you're still mixing up several things.Īs I wrote, there isn't any direct USB 3.0 and 2.0 compatiblity for reasons, I've described. And there are first plans on USB 4.0, maybe they´ll call it USB 3.0 gen 2. To be honest, the "overall situation" is annoying. Otherwise, a MOTU Fastlane would have done the job, too. I found my personal solution with the 15 years old Emagic AMT-8. That is 7 years ago! And still many companies act as there is no USB3.īut, okay the world keeps spinning.

We live in 2015, USB3 was released somewhen around 2008. Every company can put their trash on the market and you as user will sit home with the product and ask yourself, why it doesnt work. There is no certification or confirmation necessary for a company to claim that their USB gear is working proper on the USB3 bus. My solution was to add a PCI Express card with additional USB 2.0 ports, and also a Multi-TT USB 2.0 hub for the less critical devices.Yes, but thats the point, in my opinion. And, like another poster, MOTU told me the same thing regarding a MIDI Express XT.

I have more than one pice of gear that has issues, some with manuals that actually state this fact. USB 2.0 devices do not always work with USB 3.0 ports.

USB 2.0 can be called either High Speed (480Mbit), Full Speed (12Mbit) or Low Speed (1,5Mbit), speed is automatically chosen by host controller according to pull-up resistors in the downstream device and particular initialization sequence.Īnyway, I'm glad, swap for different MIDI interface solved Marco's issue. USB 3.0 is only Super Speed (5Gbit signaling rate).

Of course, it can be also driver problem.Īlso to other mentioned terms. So to be more precise, there isn't incompatibility between your MIDI interface and USB 3.0 as it lives at completely different pins, but incompatibility between MIDI interface and particular USB 2.0 host controller at computer (eg. Data signals from those two root hubs can be then connected to one common USB 3.0 connector, which has separate data pins for each standard. Usually there are two separate root hubs at motherboard in computer - one for 2.0 and one for 3.0 transfers. due to difference at physical layer of both protocols. Just remark, there isn't any direct USB 2.0 and 3.0 compatibility. Its a nightmare thinking about you have to order a new computer because your old one is damaged and that your loved gear cant be connected through a compatible MIDI-Interface

Whats up? Does none of the manufacturers is willing to upgrade their gear for current connection standards like USB 3.0? Irs known that even many USB 2.0 devices have problems on the USB 3.0 bus. All that controller stuff and midi interfaces out there can stay on USB 1.1 or USB 2.0 forever. Yes, i know (speaking about the needed data throughput) that USB 3.0 would be "overkill" for some little MIDI- or Controller-Data. So what if your gear (USB 2.0 or even USB 1.1) doesnt work correctly anymore on the USB 3.0 bus? Modern computers often shipped with USB 3.0 only. I would look to reduce the latency somehow.Thats really annoying. I haven't ever heard a rumor of a devices in the last 3 1/2 years. Considering USB3 was released in late 2008 I wouldn't hold my breath for any USB3 specific controllers/interfaces.
